Katsushika-Hokusai was a well-known artist and teacher of the early 19 century. In 1814, his sketches were published in handbook form as Hokusai-Manga. Not only did this publication surpass its initial ambitions to serve as a reference for students, it became a bestseller at the time and eventually became an enduring favorite. In its 15 volumes, totaling 970pages with over 4,000 illustrations. Hokusai Manga presents in concentrated form all the themes, motifs, and drawings techniques found throughout his art. Also included are caricatures, satirical drawings, multiple-panel illustrations, and narrative depictions, which undoubtedly became the basis for manga as it is understood today.
